Dear LISTers,
Lufthansa returned to the direct flight between Narita Airport (New Tokyo International Airport) and Frankfurt, Germany. Airbus A380's return will be scheduled next week.
The daily background radiation level in Tokyo Metropolis and Chiba Prefecture has kept near the ordinary level. Narita Airport is located at the central area of Chiba Prefecture.
The following is the data provided by the Japan Government.
http://eq.wide.ad.jp/index_en.html
Please see the KANTO REGION || Ibaraki | Tochigi | Gunma | Saitama | Chiba | Tokyo | Kanagawa |.
The problem to the environment was caused at March 15, four days after the earthquake and tsunami at March 11. But the background radiation level gradually decreased and kept near the ordinary level (ranging 0.05 to 0.1 micro Sievert/hour) for a couple of weeks except for specific areas of Fukushima Prefecture in TOHOKU REGION.
The distance between Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant and Narita Airport (or Tokyo) is more than 160 kilo-meter (100 miles). Hiroshima is approx. 800 kilometer (500 miles) west to the power plant. (The land area of Japan is as similar as that of California.)
Haneda Airport (Tokyo International Airport) had practically been operated as a domestic airport for approx. 30 years. But International flights at Haneda Airport restarted again a couple of months ago.
daily Haneda-Hiroshima flights: nine flights of ANA (Star Alliance), eight flights of JAL(One World)
daily Narita-Hiroshima flights: two flights of ANA-IBEX
Airport Access To & From Haneda Airport at Narita Airport:
http://www.narita-airport.jp/en/access/haneda/index.html
http://www.limousinebus.co.jp/en/bus_services/inter_airport_route/
My recommendation is Airport Limousine Bus service. There are daily approx. 50 bus services. It costs 3000JPYen (US$35) for one way.
There is no deteriorating condition of public safety/security in Japan.
Best wishes.

Dear LISTers,
I live on the land of Hokkaido, a big island in northern Japan. The land of Hokkaido is a part of stable North America Plate. The risk of earthquakes in Hokkaido is very small except for the coast of the Pacific Ocean and some specific regions.
I plan to fly from Hokkaido to Chubu Centrair International Airport (Code:NGO) near Nagoya, the hometown of Toyota Motor. Two-and-a-half-hour train ride by the JR's Shinkansen Super-Express train will take me from Nagoya to Hiroshima. The JR (Japan Railway) train ride is an alternative for your travel.
Not only Okonomi-yaki (Hiroshima-yaki) but also Momiji-Manju, sweet black-bean cookies, are waiting us in Hiroshima.
Best wishes.

Subject: [ ] TV program "NHK SPECIAL" in Japan
Date: Mon, 29 Mar 2010 15:48:23 +0900
From: Yoshihiko Hayakawa <hayakawa@>
To: O R D G <@ucla.edu>
Dear Dr. Farman and LIST subscribers,
I watched a TV program "NHK SPECIAL" in Japan last night.
http://www.nhk.or.jp/special/onair/100328.html
NHK is the Japan Broadcasting Corporation (like BBC in UK).
The theme of last night's program was Regenerative Medicine. Efforts by the US ARMY,
the freeze-dried extracelluar matrix usage of the swine bladder, were impressively introduced.
At the end of the introduction of US ARMY projects for healing wounded soldiers, a full-size
photograph of COL Dr. Robert (Bob) Vandre appeared on TV, and his comments were
translated into Japanese.
I remember that his focus was the development of a hand-held dental X-ray machine and
an intraoral sensor (DEXIS) in 1990's. When and why did he change his subject? The last time
I met him was in 2001 when the IADR Meeting was held in Makuhari, Chiba, Japan.
I think that the people of more than 10% (probably less than 20 %) living on the Japan land
watched the TV program and his photograph last night. I have no method to send my message
to him directly, therefore I send this to O LIST.
Best wishes.
